Wonder Woman - Film Review

Justicethon Day 7

Wonder Woman is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Danny Huston, Robin Wright and Connie Nielson.

Wonder Woman is the fourth film in the DCEU and the second not directed by Zack Snyder.

Plot
Set in 1918, long before the other 3, Princess Diana (Gal Gadot) grows up on the Amazon island of Themyscira. American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes offshore of the island and is rescued by Diana. After he tells Diana about World War I, she leaves her home in order to end the war.

Review
Let me just say: This is the best of the DCEU by far, it looks great, the story's great, the cast is great.

This actually reminds me of two Marvel movies I've seen, Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor.

CA:TFA was about a superhero going into a world war (I know they're 2 different wars) and Thor was about someone from another realm based on mythology coming into our society (I know Themyscira is on Earth and Asgard is on a different dimensional plane) Put 'em together and make the hero female: Wonder Woman.

I said this was a really good movie, but on Rotten Tomatoes' top 10 superhero movies, it's at #1. I thought it was really good, but not #1 good. But then again it's Rotten Tomatoes so who cares.

The character of Wonder Woman has an interesting backstory, with all the bondage and William Marston's two women and everything. If you caught that new History of Comics show on AMC, you'll know what I'm talking about.

The story is really good here, and there are some funny parts too, mostly in the scenes where Diana is seeing somewhere besides Themyscira for the first time, like the scenes where she has ice cream for the first time, and is trying on clothes and asks where the sword goes. And there are some pretty awesome parts too, like the battle scenes.

Seeing that there was some slow motion in the movie, I wasn't surprised that Zack Snyder was involved in this.

The cast is really good here, we have Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, and Elena Anaya. They're all really good here.

Gal Gadot is really good as Wonder Woman, just like she was in Batman v Superman. The Amazonian who becomes a superhero and tries to stop Ares. Her photo from BvS is also explained.

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor is also pretty good, he's an American spy against the Germans and takes Diana along with him.

One issue I have is that the villain Ares (David Thewlis) isn't really that memorable. He's just another typical big grey bad guy who wants to take over the world. I don't think many DCEU villains are memorable except for Lex Luthor. Which brings me to the better villain.

Elena Anaya is really good as Doctor Poison, the evil disfigured woman who tries to developed mustard gas for the war. She's a better villain than Ares and I really like the effects on her face. I'm not sure if that's CG or not, I thought it may have been because I thought it looked a bit obvious in one scene that it was, but in other scenes I'm not sure if that was real or not.

Danny Huston as General Ludendorff is fine I guess, I don't really remember much about him other than he was a German officer who worked for Doctor Poison.

Connie Nielson and Robin Wright are fine as Hippolyta and Antiope, Diana's mother and aunt respectively, but not much to say about them.

Those guys who teamed up with Steve and Diana were pretty funny but don't really remember much about them.

Overall, Wonder Woman is definitely the best of the DC Extended Universe by far.
I'm very excited to see Justice League tomorrow and review it and that will conclude the Justicethon.

8.5/10
