Halloween (2018) - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 11 Halloween is directed by David Gordon Green and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Toby Huss, Will Patton, and Nick Castle. Plot Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers (Nick Castle), the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago. Review We did it. We finally got a great Halloween movie after 20 years. After H20 we got Resurrection and the Rob Zombie movies, the less said about those, the better. But we're past those and we're talking about the new one. This is spoiler free by the way, but I'm not doing a Spoiler Talk for this movie. One thing I don't like is that they named the movie Halloween . Why couldn't they have given it a subtitle? They should've called it Halloween H40. This movie makes all other sequels non-canon, even the original Halloween II , making Michael and Laurie no longer s

Halloween II (2009) - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 10 Halloween II is directed by Rob Zombie and stars Malcolm McDowell, Tyler Mane, Sheri Moon Zombie, Brad Dourif, Danielle Harris, and Scout Taylor-Compton. Plot Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) struggles to come to terms with her brother Michael's (Tyler Mane) deadly return to Haddonfield, Illinois. Meanwhile, Michael prepares for another reunion with his sister. Review This is the director's cut by the way and I actually sat through the whole thing. I will say that I think this movie sucks, but I like it slightly more than it's predecessor. It's more creative and it tells an original story instead of rehashing the original Halloween II  like you think it might at the beginning. The beginning starts after the end of the first movie and they go to the hospital where Michael starts his killing spree and Laurie escapes and Wilford Brimley comes back with donuts! So Michael grabs an ax, which is labeled "fire extinguisher" and

Halloween (2007) - Film Review

Halloweenthon Day 9 Halloween is directed by Rob Zombie and stars Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Tyler Mane, Scout Taylor-Compton, Brad Dourif, Danielle Harris, and William Forsythe. Plot After being committed for 17 years, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane), now a grown man and still very dangerous, escapes from the mental institution and immediately returns to Haddonfield to find his baby sister, Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton). Review I want to say that I'm not a huge Rob Zombie fan, this and Halloween II were the only films of his I've seen and I didn't like either of them, but I've listened to a couple of his CD's and I enjoyed them both. I know one of them was Hellbilly Deluxe , but I don't remember what the other one was I watched the unrated cut, and I didn't even watch all of it. I skipped the first 54 minutes or so because that first act is absolutely dreadful. I do remember enough to talk about that first act though. This my my third time

Halloween: Resurrection - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 8 Halloween: Resurrection is directed by Rick Rosenthal and stars Busta Rhymes, Bianca Kajilich, Tyra Banks, Katee Sackhoff, Sean Thomas Patrick, Donna McCracken, Ryan Merriman, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Plot Three years after he last terrorized his sister, Michael Myers confronts her again, before traveling to Haddonfield to deal with the cast and crew of an Internet reality show which is being broadcast from his old home. Review Oh god I don't want to. I'll just say, this is the low point of the series. I hate this movie. It's an insult to the series, and an insult to Laurie Strode. It turns out that she killed the wrong person in H20 . She actually killed a paramedic, after she beat Michael at the school, a paramedic goes to check on him, but Michael crushes his larynx, making him unable to speak, takes the paramedic's clothes, and then leaves. They had to milk this series even more after H20 was a good enough ending. So since then she's

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 7 Halloween H20: 20 Years Later is directed by Steve Miner and stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Adam Arkin, Michelle Williams, Josh Hartnett, LL Cool J, and Joeseph Gordon-Levitt. Plot 20 years after Michael Myers' massacre in Haddonfield. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) faked her own death and traveled to California and took on the name Keri Tate. Michael finds out of Laurie's new identity and travels to California to kill his sister. Review This is the last good Halloween movie we've ever gotten, hopefully that changes with the new movie. This movie makes the Thorn trilogy non-canon, which includes Halloween 4 , the only good film in that trilogy, but I guess that's a small price to pay. This is when they started bringing rappers into the Halloween series, they had LL Cool J in this and Busta Rhymes in Resurrection  and then they stopped, for good reason. LL Cool J was good in this though. This is where the series should've ended, but no,

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 6 So are we done with the numbers now? Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is directed by Joe Chappelle, and stars Donald Pleasence, Paul Rudd, Marianne Hagan, Mitch Ryan, Devin Gardner, J. C. Brandy, and George P. Wilbur. Plot Six years after Michael Myers (George P. Wilbur) last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd (J. C. Brandy), who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans. Review Ok, I watched the Producer's Cut of the movie so I'll be reviewing that. I saw the theatrical version a couple years back, and a few months later I watched the Producer's Cut, and this is the first time I've watched it since, so I'm not sure what's different except for the ending. This movie is worse than Halloween 5 , and I think that this film is when it the franchise started to get dumber. The whole ancient cult thing is stupid. For positives, I can

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 5  Halloween 5: The Curse of Michael Myers is directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard, and stars Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, Wendy Kaplan, Beau Starr, and Donald L. Shanks. Plot It's one year since Halloween 4 , and Michael Myers (Donald L. Shanks) survives being shot by the police. He continues his search for his niece, who is in a children's' hospital. Review If I were asked where the series started to go downhill, it would be this movie. This movie really had no reason to exist, as Halloween 4 would've been a good enough ending, but it made some money, so they rushed out a sequel the next year, and it shows. This movie isn't good, it's bad, but it's not a pile of garbage or anything (oh we'll be talking about garbage later in the marathon). So this movie begins the way Halloween II began, with them recapping the ending of the movie that came before it, but instead of no time passing, a year passes in

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 4 Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers is directed by Dwight H. Little and stars Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, Michael Pataki, and George P. Wilbur. Plot Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers (George P. Wilbur) awakens on Halloween Eve and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece (Danielle Harris). Review A little history about this movie... After the disappointment of the fans after Halloween III , they brought Michael back for this one. So what if we saw him burn to death? Money has magical healing powers. This goes for Loomis too. And this is the last good Halloween movie until ten years later with H20 , but we'll talk about that later. This is a really good Halloween sequel in my opinion, it's not my favorite sequel, but it's really good. So the reason Michael is after Jamie is because she is the daughter of Laurie, we learned in Halloween II is Michael's sister. Bu

Halloween III: Season of the Witch - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 3 Halloween III: Season of the Witch is directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and stars Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, and Dan O'Herlihy. Plot An apparent murder-suicide in a hospital emergency room leads to an investigation by the on-call doctor, which reveals a plot by an insane toymaker to kill as many people as possible during Halloween through an ancient Celtic ritual involving a stolen boulder from Stonehenge and Halloween masks. Review 8 more days until Halloween , Silver Shamrock! Well, technically we have 20 days until the holiday, but 8 until the new movie. When this came out in 1982, fans hated it because it didn't have Michael Myers in it, but the hate has died down and it is now a cult film among Halloween fans. When I first watch this a couple of years ago, I didn't think it would be that good since Michael wasn't in it, but after watching it, I actually did like it. I mean it's not as good as 1, 2, 4 and H20 , but those 4 and this

Halloween II - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 2 I love the "ALL NEW" on the poster. Halloween II is directed by Rick Rosenthal and stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Charles Cyphers, Pamela Susan Shoop, Lance Guest, Leo Rossi, and Dick Warlock. Plot After Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) shoots Michael Myers (Dick Warlock) six times and falls off a balcony. Michael escapes and continues his massacre in Haddonfield, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is also sent to a hospital and Dr. Loomis gathers a group of cops to hunt down Michael and put an end to his rampage. Review This is probably my favorite sequel in the Halloween franchise. You really have to watch the first one to understand this one, because in this one there's not much explanation to what happened that night, and it's best watched back-to-back with the original Halloween , but to me it does feel like a natural progression of what would happen on that night. It's got some weird stuff that's happened off-screen,

Halloween - Film Review

Image
Halloweenthon Day 1 Halloween is directed by John Carpenter and stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Loomis, P. J. Soles, Charles Cyphers, and Nick Castle. Plot Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers (Nick Castle) escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again. Review I don't know what to say about Halloween that hasn't already been said, it's a classic. It's one of the greatest horror films ever made. This may be my favorite horror film, I don't know, there are others I love, but this is definitely one of them. What I love about this movie is that it doesn't focus on the blood and the gore and the sex and just focuses on the suspense and the atmosphere, which Rob Zombie didn't get the memo about, but I'll get to that when I get to that. This movie's ending opened up the door for sequels, and just a few of them were good. One sequel was so g

Venom - Spoiler Talk

Image
So, I just did my spoiler free review of Venom , and now I'm going to talk about spoilers for Venom . The plothole I mentioned in the main review is that in the beginning the evil Symbiote (sorry if I don't know it's name) is possessing this old woman and it's goal is to get to San Fransisco, and it arrives six months later. Um, what was it doing all that time? It could've just gone immediately. Also, that old woman gives the evil symbiote to a little girl, and I'll bring this up later. So Eddie is a reporter, and when he tries to take down Drake (the villain) by accusing him of killing test subjects after snooping on his fiance's (Michelle Williams) laptop, he gets fired for this, which also gets her fired, so she breaks up with him and Eddie starts living in a junk apartment in Chinatown. So one of Drake's workers brings Eddie into the laboratory where their testing the symbiotes on homeless people, and one of them happens to be a friend of Edd

Venom - Film Review

Image
I'm back. Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Reid Scott, and Jenny Slate. Plot Journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is trying to take down Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom -- leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Review This movie isn't a turd in the wind like I thought it would've been, but it's not as good as it could've been. Let's start with the positives. The movie was entertaining, I'll give it that, like when Venom verbally abuses Eddie, but that does lead into a negative that I'll get into later. It's fun but not really great. Seeing Venom fighting that other Symbiote near the end was pretty cool. Seeing Venom fighting bad guys for the first time was pretty awesome. Tom Hardy is a better Venom than Topher Grace was

The Predator - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 6 The Predator is directed by Shane Black and stars Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown and Keegan-Michael Key. Plot When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe's most lethal hunters' return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race. Review I don't think Shane Black gets  Predator , which is sad because he was in Predator . Predator 's not all about jokes, I mean the original Predator had jokes, but they weren't all the time or anything. Shane was probably like "ok, so I'll take the traits from my character in Predator , and give it to every character" and it just doesn't work. MCU humor should only stay in the MCU. Also, Shane Black directed Iron Man 3 . There are more bad Predator movies than there are good Predator movies, unless you don't count the Alien vs. Pre

Predators - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 5 Predators is directed by Nimród Antal and stars Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, and Laurence Fishburne. Plot A group of elite warriors parachute into an unfamiliar jungle and are hunted by Predators. Review It's been 5 days since I reviewed a good Predator movie, and while I thought this movie was good, it was not great. Unlike Predator 2 , this feels like a Predator sequel, I mean it's not as great as Predator , but I think it's good. This movie really brings it back to the roots of  Predator  and does not feel like a cop drama or a forced crossover in any way. Also, it's got some cool action and it's pretty awesome watching the Super Predator (or whatever it's called) fighting the classic Predator. And Adrien Brody vs. Super Predator is cool. There was a twist with Topher Grace's character that was just "eh", it turns out that he's a psychopatic murderer back on Earth. Speaking o

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 4 Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is directed by Greg and Colin Strause, and stars Steven Pasquale, Reiko Aylesworth, John Ortiz, Johnny Lewis, and Ariel Gade. Plot Warring Alien and Predator races descend on a rural Colorado town, where unsuspecting residents have to join together for any chance of survival. Review Ok, I'm going to get the positives out of the way. I liked the Aliens and the Predator, and the Predalien was cool looking. The Predator vs. the Predalien was cool. What I didn't like: Everything else. My god, this movie is abysmal. Near the end it felt like a chore to sit through and I eventually stopped paying attention. Also, you can't see a thing in this movie because of the god-awful (or in this case, non-existent) lighting. Also, the characters are just not interesting at all, at first the teenage characters feel like their from the CW. So this movie is set in some town in Colorado, and the Xenomorphs and the Predator i

Alien vs. Predator - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 3 Alien vs. Predator is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and stars Sanaa Lathan, Raoul Bova, Lance Henriksen, and Ewen Bremner. Plot During an archaeological expedition on Bouvetøya Island in Antarctica, a team of archaeologists and other scientists find themselves caught up in a battle between the two legends. Soon, the team realize that only one species can win. Review You'd think an Alien and Predator crossover would be great, right? Right? Well this movie... it's just kinda passable. It's not the worst thing ever, but it's not something I would really rewatch occasionally. I actually watched this on IFC (not when they were showing Predator 1 and 2, but they were showing the Alien movies) over a year ago and this is my first time rewatching it. I watched the unrated version today and I don't think I could tell you what was added, as it's been over a year. It's got some cool stuff, like showing the Predators have been coming t

Predator 2 - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 2 Predator 2  is directed by Stephen Hopkins and stars Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Bill Paxton, Ruben Blades, María Conchita Alonso, and Kevin Peter Hall. Plot Amidst a territorial gang war in 1997, a the Predator (Kevin Peter Hall) stalks the citizens of Los Angeles and the only man between him and his prey is veteran L.A.P.D. officer, Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Donald Glover). Review I just can't think of too much to say, so this review may not be that detailed. Who thought that a sequel to Predator would be so boring? Also, who thought it was a good idea to make a sequel to Predator as a cop drama? It just doesn't work. It's not that this film is flat out awful , as it's just extremely boring. I was uninterested while watching it, and just waiting for it to be over. I first watched this on IFC about a year ago, and it was boring with all the commercials, and it's also boring without them. Whenever I watch a Predator movie, I want t

Predator - Film Review

Image
Predatorthon Day 1 Predator is directed by John McTiernan and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Elpedia Carrillo, Sonny Landham, Shane Black, and Kevin Peter Hall. Alright, before I actually go on, this may not be a daily or consistent marathon, because there's a lot of stuff going on in my life right now, and the power may be going out where I live, and this may not be daily. Also, not only am I doing the Predator trilogy before I see The Predator , but I'm also reviewing the Alien vs. Predator duology. Alright, onto the review. Plot Dutch's (Arnold Schwarzenegger) team of commandos go off to find hostages. On the way they find skinned bodies with looks of terror on their faces. They find the terrorists camp and kill them all. But thats only the beginning of the bad things. The commandos are picked off one by one by an invisible enemy and die horrible deaths until only Dutch is left... Review Wow, this is an awesome action movie. Predator is great. I

The Nun - Film Review

Image
The Nun is directed by Corin Hardy and stars Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons. Plot A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun. Review If I could sum up how I felt about The Nun , that word would be "disappointed". The Nun is a disappointment. So this movie is a spin-off/prequel to The Conjuring 2 ,as it's about Valak, the demon nun, and it even ties into the first Conjuring , as one of the characters from this was edited into a scene with The Conjuring at the end of this movie. They even added an extra line from Ed, saying "they called him Frenchie". This movie relies way too much on jumpscares, and you can easily see when they're about to come, one of them was even in the trailers . There was even an ad pulled from YouTube because it was too scary

The Conjuring Megathon

Image
Well The Nun is out today, and I'm not seeing it today, I'm seeing it a couple days, and I didn't know when to start the Conjuring marathon, I watched all four in the span of three days and figured I would give these short reviews of all of them in this one post, I've never one one of these before. This is actually my first time watching The Conjuring 2  and Annabelle: Creation , which I actually haven't seen at the time of writing this intro. Also, spoilers for all these movies, you have been warned. That said, let's get on with it. THE CONJURING (2013)  The Conjuring is directed by James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, and Ron Livingston. Plot Based on the true story in 1971. Paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are called on to help the Perrons with their celestial disturbance. The disturbance inclines as the Warrens become closer to clearing the family's abnormalities. R
