Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Film Review
Justicethon Day 4
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams and Jesse Eisenburg.
Plot
It's been nearly two years since Superman's (Henry Cavill) battle with Zod (Michael Shannon) almost completly destroyed the city of Metropolis. The massive damage left many feeling angry and helpless, including crime-fighting billionaire Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck). Convinced that Superman is now a threat to humanity, Batman embarks on a personal vendetta to end his reign on Earth, while the conniving Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) launches his own crusade against the Man of Steel.
Review
I actually first saw this movie last year when I rented it from a RedBox before seeing Suicide Squad but I own the Blu-Ray now so I should stop rambling.
I literally have no idea where to start with this, like it's not crap, but it's not great.
Let's start with the story, for a 2 1/2 hour film, this really could've been cut down shorter, there were some things that didn't need to be here. Like I really think this film needed Doomsday, or Zod, or MARTHA!
I felt like Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) really didn't need to be here, like she was just here to set up the Justice League, which brings me to my next point: how they set up the Justice League.
Man of Steel had a cool showing that there is a larger universe here with LexCorp and Wayne Enterprises was cool, what happened here was not. Having Wonder Woman looking at videos on her laptop of The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman is not a good way to set up a universe, they could've done better. They had Batman finding those folders and looking at Wonder Woman's but not the others. They could've had Batman look at all the videos instead. That wouldn't make it good though.
I'm not gonna go into detail about MARTHA! because of how stupid it was.
Also, I didn't feel sad when Superman died because I knew he would show up again, so why kill him off?
To people were complaining about how Batman kills people in this and he doesn't kill in anything else. Read this. Batman killing or branding didn't really bother me.
There are some pacing issues too, like in the scene where Superman finds out that Lex Luthor had Martha (Diane Lane) kidnapped, it feels like the movie is almost over but we had an hour left. And this was the theatrical version. I didn't watch the ultimate version for this marathon but I have seen it when I marathoned all the Batman movies I had in hype for Batman and Harley Quinn. I don't know if I could sit through that cut again.
I cared more about the Batman scenes more than I did Superman's because Superman's scenes were mostly political talk.
Let's get into the cast, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams and Gal Gadot were good. I thought they played their roles well.
Jesse Eisenburg is a different story, I really didn't like him as Lex Luthor. Before I saw the movie, I was annoyed about the fact that he had hair. (it came out a month before I turned 14.) But after seeing it, I know why I didn't like his performance: He's annoying. And that thing with Jolly Ranchers was a bit weird.
Don't want to give Eisenburg too much hate because I've only seen two of his movies, this and Zombieland. Sadly, I'd say he's the DCEU's most memorable villain, however, memorable =/= good. Gene Hackmen and Kevin Spacey were better.
I thought that Jeremy Irons wasn't a great Alfred, I'm sure he's a good actor but he just doesn't feel like Alfred. Guess all you have to do to be Alfred is be old and be British. Michael Gough and Michael Caine were just better.
I also thought it was kinda funny that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is in this, he was also in Watchmen, another DC film and a much better Zack Snyder film. It's just that in Watchmen he plays The Comedian, a complete jerk, but in this he's Thomas Wayne a nice person.
I'm tired, so I'm ending this here. Batman v Superman is average to me, not bad, not great, not something I would watch over and over again. It's my least favorite of the DCEU.
Stay tuned for my Suicide Squad review tomorrow.
