Ant-Man - Film Review
Infinitython Day 12
Ant-Man is not directed by Edgar Wright but Peyton Reed instead and stars Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, and Michael Peña.
Plot
Armed with the ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Review
This is actually my first time watching Ant-Man all the way through, my first time trying watch it I was sick one night and I fell asleep.
About me mentioning that Edgar Wright did not direct Ant-Man, there's a story behind that: Edgar Wright was going to direct this movie, but left due to creative differences. He said that he wanted to make a Marvel movie, but they didn't want to make an Edgar Wright movie. Although it let him make Baby Driver, which is an idea Edgar has had since before Shaun of the Dead. And Baby Driver was one of my favorite films of 2017 but that's not the point. You can see some of Edgar's style in the movie and it's nice they gave him story credit.
Now, onto the actual movie, what did I think? Well it's actually really good but it's not my favorite MCU movie.
It's got some really good CGI in it, especially when they show Scott shrinking in the Ant-Man suit, sure it's probably all CGI, but it looks incredible, and it's awesome when Ant-Man and Yellowjacket (Corey Stoll) were fighting while shrunk down. And the action scenes are really good.
It also address the whole "well why don't they just call the Avengers" thing, but the Avengers can't do everything. Scott says that they should call the Avengers, and Hank tells him that this is not like Stark's technology and that this could change reality.
Speaking of the Avengers, it was awesome seeing Falcon showing up at the Avengers Facility fighting Ant-Man. Also, the credits scene with Falcon, Steve, and Bucky teasing Civil War was awesome. So was the other credits scene teasing Ant-Man and the Wasp. One scene has Falcon mentioning Spider-Man, not by name but you know he's talking about Spider-Man.
It's not perfect, it has flaws, like the villain. With the exception of Loki and Ultron, never go into an MCU movie expecting a good or memorable villain. Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket is another bad guy who wants to destroy the world because he's evil.
Also wasn't a big fan of the plot with Scott's daughter, because he's a former convict who wants to see his daughter, just like Spider-Man 3, but we don't talk about that movie.
Let's talk about the characters. Paul Rudd is great as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man and he's a great addition to the MCU. Ant-Man is a character that pretty much only comic book fans knew about before he was introduced into the MCU. But yeah, Paul Rudd is great, however I was not on the edge of my seat to see if he would live or not during his fight with Yellowjacket because I saw Civil War before I saw this movie.
Michael Douglass is great as Hank Pym, the first Ant-Man and Hope's father. He created this technology and started this company. He passed on the role of Ant-Man to Scott after Darren tried to sell his new technology, the Yellowjacket suit, to HYDRA. We actually learn that he lost his wife Janet after she fell into the Quantum Realm, and when he tells this story to Hope, Scott completely ruins the moment. Janet helped him create the Wasp suit that Hope will use in Ant-Man and the Wasp. This version of Hank seems like a nicer version of the one in the comics.
Evangeline Lilly is good as Hope, Hank's daughter. She doesn't care for Scott at first but she then starts to get used to him. She is a board member of Pym Technologies and becomes the Wasp after the movie ends.
Michael Peña is really funny as Luis. He is pretty much the comic relief of this movie but he is really funny. I love how he just recaps stories about being at an art gallery with his cousin or something. Even though his girlfriend left him, his mother died, and his father was deported, he still kept the van. I'd love to see him back in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Overall, Ant-Man is an entertaining MCU movie, but it isn't one of the best in the franchise.
Ant-Man gets an 8.5/10.
Before I go, I want to say that there will be no review tomorrow because the next movie in the MCU is Captain America: Civil War, but I already reviewed that movie, so I will be back on Wednesday with a review of Doctor Strange.
Well, we're done with Phase 2.
