Captain America: Civil War - Film Review

I couldn't see Black Panther today, so this will have to do.

Captain America: Civil War is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, stars everybody and is based off the comic series Civil War by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven.

Plot
A possible cure for superheroes deeply divides courageous Captain America (Chris Evans) and arrogant Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Factions of superheroes divides themselves in to Team Captain America and Team Stark. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawekye (Jeremy Renner) must choose sides. Plus, Bucky Barnes (Sebeastian Stan) is possibly behind the murder of King T'Chaka (John Kani), a member of one of the factions, and T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) his son plans to kill him.

After another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps, one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark's surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.

Political involvement in the Avengers' activities causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.

Review
Avengers: Civil War is a more fitting title than Captain America: Civil War. It is more of an Avengers movie than a Captain America movie, I'd say it's a sequel to both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I'm kind of nitpicking, it's a good name.

This is probably one of the top 3 MCU movies so far. I'd say that this, The Avengers, and The Winter Soldier are the best 3 MCU films.

I first watched this when I picked up the Best Buy exclusive Blu-Ray in 2016 and was disappointed that I didn't go see this in theaters, I really wish I have.

I want to talk about the "whose side are you on" stuff that was going on when the movie was out, I do think a lot of it was for promotional reasons, but it does play a part in the movie. I'm a bigger Iron Man fan, but I'm on team Captain America.

I did mention a small bit of what started their conflict in the movie, but I want to go a little more into why the characters, mostly Captain America and Iron Man, were fighting, and what started this conflict.

1. After the incident in the beginning that killed innocent people, the Avengers are to be controlled by the United Nations, and Steve Rogers and Tony Stark disagree on this. Tony wants the Avengers to be controlled because he feels guilty about the events of The Avengers, accidentally creating Ultron, and the events on Sokovia. He wants to make amends and feels that the Avengers should be controlled.

Steve however, does not want the Avengers to be controlled, he believes in freedom, and that Government control takes away freedom (this is why I'm Team Cap). Remember, just five years earlier he woke up after dealing with Nazis.

2. Bucky Barnes is back. Those who watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier will know that Bucky Barnes, a.k.a The Winter Soldier, is a friend of Steve Rogers. Bucky killed Tony's parents in a car "accident" after being weaponized by Hydra in 1991. Tony is angry at Bucky for what he did, but Steve wants to stay loyal to his friend.

Also, there was a bombing in Vienna that killed T'Chaka, formerly Black Panther, King of Wakanda and father to T'Challa who becomes both King and Black Panther. Bucky is framed for the bombing, and Captain America believes that Bucky is not truly responsible and tries to get to Bucky before the government does, and Iron Man will help the government get to Bucky.

I've not read Mark Millar's comic series Civil War, I've read some of his other work, so I don't know how close it is to the comic. I know the comic has the Captain America/Iron Man stuff, but I don't know much about the series. I would like to give it a read someday, along with some of Mark Millar's other works.

Part of the fun of Civil War is seeing heroes go up against each other in teams. On Iron Man's team we have Black Panther and Spider-Man, both of whom made their debut MCU appearances in this movie, while on Captain America's team is people we've seen in this universe before.

My favorite part of the entire movie is the airport scene. It's just so awesome! The other action scenes are good too, like the opening in Nigeria.

I want to talk about the cast, mostly newer actors, because everyone knows about the regulars in this universe, so I want to talk about characters who first appeared in this movie.

Chadwick Boseman is really good as T'Challa, a.k.a Black Panther. He's a side character in here but hopefully he improves in the movie Black Panther, whenever I go to see that. He's really good here.

Tom Holland is also really good as Spider-Man. This is probably the best film version of Spider-Man we've seen. Tobey Maguire was good, Andrew Garfield was ok, but Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man. It's fitting to have Spider-Man played by an actual teenager in here rather than guys in their late 20's. And we don't have to see this.

Daniel Brühl is really good in here as Helmut Zemo. He is the main villain in this movie, as he sets up the whole movie by framing Bucky for the death of T'Chaka and manipulates Captain America and Iron Man into fighting each other using Bucky as a pawn.

His reason for this is because he lost everything during the Battle of Sokovia in Age of Ultron when the Avengers fought Ultron so now he wants the Avengers gone. He knew he couldn't defeat the Avengers by himself so he set all this up. Daniel Brühl plays him very well.

He looks very different in the comics, though. And he was in The Cloverfiel Paradox but we don't talk about that right now.

Other people we've seen in this universe such as Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, and Paul Bettany are all really great here like usual.

Overall, Captain America: Civil War is not only one of the best films Marvel has ever made, but also one of the best comic book films ever made. This might be my favorite of the MCU, I don't know, as The Avengers was great too.

Captain America: Civil War gets a 10/10.

See you whenever with my review of Black Panther, whenever that may be.
