Iron Man 3 - Film Review
Infinitython Day 7
Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black and stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, and Ben Kingsley.
Plot
After saving New York from an alien invasion, Tony Stark buries himself deeper into his work by building a ton of new and improved Iron Man suits. He also starts having constant nightmares and doesn't know why. But deep in the shadows, a new menace called the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) starts orchestrating a series of terrorist attacks all over the world. When his home is demolished and his suits are destroyed, Stark begins a personal journey to finding out the truth about the bombings and tracking down whoever is truly responsible. Little does Stark know however is that someone else from his past has his own plans against him and proves to be even more powerful than Stark realizes.
Review
This feels more like a sequel to The Avengers more than it does to Iron Man 2, just like how Iron Man 2 feels more like an Avengers prequel than an Iron Man sequel.
So what do I think of the movie? Well, I like it better than Iron Man 2, but not as much as Iron Man. I actually watched this for the first time today, so I've now seen every single MCU movie.
This movie does have some good parts, like the scene near the end where Tony Stark and James Rhodey (Don Cheadle) and all the other Iron Man suits are killing all the terrorists is a pretty awesome scene.
Iron Man making technology from whatever he could find (or in this case, buy from the hardware store) is pretty cool, just like how me made the first suit in the original Iron Man out of scrap metal while being held captive in the Middle East.
The skydiving scene was pretty awesome, where Tony makes everyone hold hands in the sky during the rescue.
The post credits scene where Tony has Bruce Banner acting like his therapist was pretty good.
Also, Iron Patriot (formerly known as War Machine)'s suit looks awesome, it's like if Tony Stank built a suit for Captain America.
It also has some not-so-good moments, like The Mandarin attacking Stark's home. Tony told the Mandarin to come and get him, and even gave him his address, and when his house is attacked, Tony's surprised and he had no plans for if The Mandarin attacked him. and out of the 42 Iron Man suits, he picked the one that doesn't fully work. Also, this is in the MCU, so where were the other Avengers during time like this? I guess we had to wait for Age of Ultron before we saw them together again.
Also, The Mandarin is one of my least favorite MCU villains, and it turns out who you think is the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) is just an actor, and the real Mandarin is Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and he hired Ben Kingsley to pretend to be the Mandarin. Now, I've never read any comics with The Mandarin, but from what I've heard, the Mandarin in the MCU is as faithful to the comics as Deadpool is in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and that's just a terrible movie.
Let's talk about the characters. Robert Downey Jr. is great as always as Tony Stark, but this time he's coming to terms with his near-death experience after Loki unleashed aliens in New York and he is now having anxiety attacks. Can't think of much else to say since I've said all I could've in the other reviews.
Gwyneth Paltrow is back as Pepper, and in here we get to see her in the Iron Man suit, and that's pretty cool.
Don Cheadle is back as War Machine, but he's not War Machine anymore, he's Iron Patriot. He looks cooler as Iron Patriot than he does War Machine.
Ben Kinsgley plays Trevor, an actor who Killian hires to play the Mandarin in TV signal jams. He's ok in the movie.
Guy Pearce is the real villain of the movie and the real Mandarin, and as most MCU villains go, he's not that memorable. He created the Extremis virus, which he use to cure his own disability, and it gave him superhuman strengh and the ability to produce heat. He then gives it to his workers who help in in his terrorist activities.
Overall, Iron Man 3 is a fun and good superhero movie, but I can understand why some don't like it.
Iron Man 3 gets an 8.5/10.
