Thor - Film Review

Infinitython Day 4

Thor is directed by Kenneth Branaugh and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings, and Stellan Skarsgard.

Plot
The warrior Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) for his arrogance and sent to Earth to live among humans. Falling in love with scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) teaches Thor much-needed lessons, and his new-found strength comes into play as a villain from his homeland sends dark forces toward Earth.

Review
So Thor isn't too bad actually, it's definitely better than Thor: The Dark World, but not as good as Thor: Ragnarok, which some of you may remember was my first ever review on this blog.

It's not in my top 10 MCU movies, maybe a bit toward the bottom, but I did enjoy this movie. It's got some funny moments like Thor going into the pet store asking for a horse, only to find out they don't sell horses, and the scene where he's in the diner and he says he likes the coffee is hilarious.

The set design and CGI on Asgard looks great, even if in some parts it looks a little Star Wars prequel-ish. The costume design is amazing too.

Also, the scene with Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) finding Mjonir in the desert, I'm pretty sure that's just the same post credits scene from Iron Man 2 with a different camera angle.

Also, seeing Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) was pretty cool but I'm sure he was just there because he was going to be in The Avengers the year after this came out.

Also, the action is pretty great here, it's not two guys in similar suits fighting or two Shreks fighting, but it was different from what we've seen in the MCU at the time.

As for some negatives, well, the romance between Thor and Jane is a bit cliche'd and it can be a typical fish-out-of-water story, and the movie can be a bit forgettable.

Let's talk about the characters. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston as Thor and Loki are two of the best casting choices in the MCU ever.

Chris Hemsworth is great as Thor and he's just as great throughout the MCU movies he's in. He's about to be king of Asgard, when suddenly the Frost Giants show up and start messing everything up and so Thor, Loki, Sif, and the Warriors Three go to Jotunheim to confront the Frost Giants and fights them against Odin's (Anthony Hopkins) wishes and he then shows up and brings them back to Asgard. So what does he do afterwards? He banishes Thor to Earth as a mortal and sends the hammer with him. He meets Jane Foster, Darcy (Kat Dennings), and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and he finds his hammer, but he can't lift it because he's been drained of his powers and is captured by S.H.I.E.L.D.

After he gets out, he fights Loki and that giant suit of armor in New Mexico and later they face off on the rainbow bridge on Asgard, where the bridge is destroyed and Loki (apparently) commits suicide.

Tom Hiddleston is really great as Loki, Thor's brother but turns out that he's adopted. He is actually the son of a Laufey, the leader of the Frost Giants adopted by Loki. After Odin falls into "Odinsleep" do restrengthen himself, Loki uses this opportunity to become King of Asgard and tells Thor that Odin is dead and that he is unwanted back on Asgard.

Loki kills Laufey and attempts to destroy Jotunheim with the Bifrost bridge to prove himself worthy to Odin. It doesn't work.

And the other cast is good too, I would go into more, but it's late and I'm tired.

Overall, Thor isn't a bad film, it's actually a bit good, but it's not one of my favorites in the MCU.

Thor gets an 8/10.
