Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan - Film Review
Friday the 13th-a-thon Day 8
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes a Cruise to Manhattan is directed by Rob Hedden and stars Jensen Dagget, Scott Reeves, Barbara Bingham, Peter Mark Richman, and Kane Hodder as Jason.
Plot
The graduating class of the local high school is going on a luxury cruise with Jason Voorhees as a stowaway. The heroine Rennie Wickham (Jensen Dagget) believes she was almost drowned by Jason as a child. Jason eventually sinks the boat and kills many of the students on it, but many of them escape to Manhattan. A long battle with Jason ensues until Jason is washed away in the New York sewers by a midnight flooding of toxic waste.
Review
I am definitely not alone on this, I don't like this movie. I think this is definitely the worst of the Paramount films, and the most boring too, because it's an hour and 40 minutes. About 10 minutes are set with these two teens on a small boat on Crystal Lake, 50 minutes are on this cruise ship, and 40 minutes are set in New York.
Also, most of the scenes set in New York are not filmed in New York. Most of the New York scenes were filmed in British Columbia and only the scenes in Times Square were filmed in New York. This was because of it's budget.
Also, I think this movie was made just so they could have that shot of Jason in Times Square. You know the one.
The part with Jason seeing the billboard with a hockey mask then turning toward the camera is pretty funny.
Some good kills are when Jason kills that girl with a guitar, Jason throwing Rennie's uncle (Peter Mark Richman) into a container of toxic chemicals, Jason killing that guy with a rock in the sauna. There's a scene where Jason throws a diner employee into a mirror. That worker was played by Ken Kerzinger, who played Jason in Freddy vs. Jason. I guess Kane Hodder was getting his revenge early.
I don't want to go too much into the character's because there's not much to talk about and it's late at night while I'm writing this, I will say that Rennie's uncle is a bit of a jerk because he only wants things to go his way, and he's always disregarding everyone's claims that Jason's on the ship, and he through his niece into a lake to get her to swim.
Kane Hodder is also really great as Jason in here, but why does toxic waste turn Jason into a kid?
I guess we'll never know.
Overall, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan is not a good movie, it's not my least favorite of the series, but my least of the Paramount ones. The marathon is over now.
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan gets a 4/10.
