Friday the 13th Part III - Film Review

Friday the 13th-a-thon Day 3

Friday the 13th Part III is directed by Steve Miner and stars Dana Kimmell, Paul Kratka, Tracie Savage, Jeffery Rogers, Catherine Parks, Larry Zerner, and Richard Brooker as Jason.

Plot
One day after the events of Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason Voorhees goes to a roadside store where he gets a new set of clothes and stalks a married couple. Meanwhile, Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell) and her friends make their way to her family cabin, Higgins Haven. But this time, Jason, with his new famous hockey mask will not let the teenagers have fun. Once again, he starts a killing spree.

Review
This movie is when the Friday the 13th series started to get really good. It improved with The Final Chapter, declined a little with A New Beginning, really improved with Jason Lives and went downhill with Jason Takes Manhattan. But we'll talk about those movies in their reviews.

This is the first in the series where Jason gets his iconic hockey mask, he takes it from Shelly (Larry Zerner) after killing him. This is also the first in the series not set at a camp, it's set at a cabin owned by Chris's family near Crystal Lake. The cabin is also an area you can play in Friday the 13th: The Game.

This movie came out when 3D was relatively new, and they really try to show off the 3D in here when you watch it (I watched it in 2D) and it's mostly just them poking sticks at the camera. Oh, and juggling.

This has one of my favorite kills in the series, when Jason kills Rick (Paul Kratka) by picking him up, crushing his head and his eye comes out. And it's in 3D. Another one of my favorite kills in when Vera (Catherine Parks) accidentally drops Shelly's wallet in the water and then is shot in the eye by Jason with a speargun.

It seems that recapping the events of the previous entry is tradition in the first four movies, as this recaps the last 5 minutes of Friday the 13th Part 2, and Friday the 13th Part 2 recaps the last few minutes of Friday the 13th.

This also has the best opening score of the series. Harry Manfredini did a great job on this one.

Let's talk about the characters, I won't get into all of the characters because a lot of them are typical horror characters that you know will die. Let's talk about our final girl Chris. Chris is another awesome final girl in the series, just like Alice and Ginny. Unlike the previous two, Chris actually has met the killer before the events of the movie, because in one scene she talks to Rick about how she was attacked by a hideous man two years prior, and Jason later lifts up his hockey mask during a battle with Chris and reveals that he was the man who attacked her.

After her battle she gets into a boat outside the cabin like Alice in the original Friday the 13th and is attacked in the water like Alice was. But it turns out she was hallucinating, just like when she imagined Jason bursting out of the barn door only for it to be closed the whole time.

Another character I want to talk about is Shelly, he is my favorite non-Jason character in this movie, everyone in the movie hates him, but I love this guy because he pretty much is the comic relief and I can get a chuckle out of almost every scene he's in.

The biker gang are also some of my favorite characters in the movie, like when Vera accidentally drops Shelly's wallet and Fox (Gloria Charles) picks it up and tells Vera to ask for it nicely. Also one of my favorite parts is when Shelly accidentally knocks over their bikes and the leader Ali (Nick Savage) gets angry and breaks the car windows.

Ali actually reappears near the end when you think they've all died, he's back and tries to help Chris before he is killed again.

Jason is also really good here, he is no longer the sack wearing, long haired killer, but now a hulking bald figure with the iconic hockey mask. Richard Brooker is really great as Jason. The scene in the barn with Chris vs. Jason is great with her trying to kill him several times until she axes him in the head.

Overall, Friday the 13th Part III is a great sequel and where the franchise really starts to improve. I'm going to give Friday the 13th Part 3 a 9/10.
