Spider-Man: Homecoming - Film Review
Infinitython day 16 or 17, I skipped yesterday so I don't know or really care
Spider-Man: Homecoming is directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Zendaya, Donald Glover (#glover4spiderman), Jon Favreau, and Marissa Tomei.
Plot
Peter Parker (Tom Holland) balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of The Vulture (Michael Keaton), a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.
Review
To think we hadn't had a good Spider-Man movie since 2004. Well 2017 came along and gave us one. This film is the best Spider-Man movie since Spider-Man 2. I don't know if it's better than Spider-Man 2, probably not, but it's still really good.
In my movies of 2017 list I put this film at #11. Do I still stand by that? Yes I do. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the second best MCU film of 2017.
I don't know where to start with this, I guess one thing I could say is that I'm glad the MCU didn't use the Spider-Man origin story with Uncle Ben and he's already Spider-Man. The Amazing Spider-Man (a very misleading name) said that is was "the untold story" but it was Spider-Man's origin story retold for a different movie.
Also, this creates a plothole in the MCU timeline. It's said that this movie is set eight years after the events of The Avengers, which would mean this movie is set in 2020, but this is set about a couple after Captain America: Civil War which is set in 2016. I think it's a screw up on the makers part because it should say it 4 years later.
It's got some really good parts, like Spider-Man at the Washington Monument. Spider-Man and the ferry boat is a good scene. It's not quite the train scene from Spider-Man 2, but it's pretty good.
The part with Spider-Man vs. Vulture is great. Vulture is probably one of the best villains in the MCU as far as MCU villains go, but he is no Loki, although he starts off as evil guy who wants to destroy the city for evil reasons, but it turns out he has a family. I actually was not expecting the twist.
I really liked the vlog that Peter was making in the opening during the events of Civil War. I also really liked seeing the Captain America fitness videos.
This is also a quite funny movie, Ned (Jacob Batalon) is the comic relief in the movie and he is quite funny. Also I found the scenes with Happy (Jon Favreau) to be pretty funny, just how he doesn't really like dealing with Peter. This is probably the funniest Spider-Man movie to date. Also the ending with Aunt May (Marissa Tomei) seeing Peter in the suit is a funny way to end the movie.
In my Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 review I said that they didn't give too much away in the trailers, it is the complete opposite here because the trailers gave too much away, even some shots that weren't in the movie like Spider-Man swinging with Iron Man flying next to him. That shot was nowhere in the movie.
Let's talk about the characters. Tom Holland is the best Peter Parker we've had in a movie ever. I'm a bit more nostalgic for Tobey Maguire because he was the one I grew up watching, and I wasn't a fan of Andrew Garfield because he really doesn't feel like Peter Parker, but Tom is definitely the best. Also, he's only 21 and he's one of the few adult actors playing a teenager who actually looks the age he's supposed to be.
It seems that sometime after Batman Returns, Michael Keaton went from a DC hero to a Marvel villain. From Batman to Birdman (is that movie good btw?) to Vulture. He was a salvager turned arms trafficker after his company is forced out of business. We learn that he is actually the father of Liz (Laura Herrier), Peter's love interest. Michael Keaton plays him really well and is probably the best Spider-Man movie villain since Alfred Molina as Doc Ock from Spider-Man 2. Also, when he's in prison, how does some other guy hear that he knows Spider-Man? That's from one of the credits scenes.
Robert Downey Jr. is great as always as Tony Stark so there isn't much to say about him.
Jacob Batalon is really funny as Ned, Peter's friend. He accidentally says out loud that Peter knows Spider-Man after he and Peter hear Liz talking about him. He and Vulture are the only ones who know who Peter is and he becomes Peter's "guy in the chair". It's also pretty funny when he's helping Spider-Man track down Vulture and he says he's looking at porn. I guess porn is easier and more believable to explain than helping a superhero tracking down a villain.
All the other cast is good in here, they don't really have much I can comment on though.
Overall, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a pretty funny and enjoyable entry in the MCU. Each MCU film of 2017 improved on the previous one in my opinion, I thought Spider-Man: Homecoming was better than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, I thought Thor: Ragnarok was better than Homecoming.
Spider-Man: Homecoming gets an 8.5/10.
Before I go, I want to say that there will be no reviews tomorrow and Monday because normally those days would be Ragnarok and Black Panther but I reviewed those two already.
