Review
Well, 15 days. This is now the longest movie marathon I've had so far. Not just on the blog, but ever. My previous record was the Batman marathon I had last year for Batman and Harley Quinn, which lasted exactly two weeks.
The movie itself is entertaining. I think it's funnier than Guardians of the Galaxy, but it's not better that Guardians of the Galaxy. When I ranked everything I saw in 2017, I had this movie on the #16 spot, I still stand by what I there.
This has some of the best special effects in the MCU, even the blue screen in the movie is great. This is probably the most colorful film in the MCU. This movie literally has gold people in it.
In this movie, we actually get to learn a bit more about some of the Guardians, in the first movie some of this was hinted at, but in this movie we get to learn more about them. We actually learn about Star-Lord's heritage.
About it being funnier than the first movie, there are a lot of scenes that prove that, such as Peter calling Rocket (Bradley Cooper) a raccoon, gets angry, and then calls him a trash panda.
So is when Ego (Kurt Russell) calls Rocket a "triangle faced monkey". It's also funny when Drax (Dave Bautista) tries to tell Mantis (Pom Klementieff) that she's ugly but tells her it's a good thing.
But the funniest part to me was when Mantis tells Peter that he feels sexual love for Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and hearing Drax laughing at him. People were cracking up in my theater when this scene started playing.
It's got some good parts, like when you find out that Ego has mated with several species around the universe to pass his powers down and then kills the ones who don't have them. Wow, that just got dark. Let's lighten it up a bit.
Rocket, Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Baby Groot in the prison is hilarious, like when Rocket keeps laughing at Taserface because of his name, and when Rocket and Yondu are trying to get Groot to get something and he gets the completely wrong thing, like he even gets a severed toe.
I also really liked the opening where they're fighting that alien creature and Mr. Blue Sky by ELO is playing. Also it's funny when Drax is inside the alien and he's just stabbing it from the inside.
As for some negatives, hmm. I wasn't a big fan of the gold people, I couldn't think of much to comment on and they wanted the Guardians just because Rocket stole some batteries from them.
Also, why was Thanos never shown? He's a big part of the GOTG lore. He's not even one of its five credits scenes. I'm sure there's more but I can't think of much.
Let's talk about the characters. Chris Pratt is just as great, maybe better, as Star-Lord in this as he is Guardians of the Galaxy. We actually learn more about him and his heritage. We learn that he is the son of Ego the Living Planet. We do learn that in the trailers, but they didn't give too much away. Something Spider-Man: Homecoming failed at, but we'll talk about that movie in it's review.
Zoe Saldana is great as Gamora, and we get more about her relationship with Nebula (Karen Gillian). She's probably the smartest and most mature of the Guardians, but she is funny too. And we get a bit more about her relationship with Peter.
Dave Bautista is great as Drax. In the first movie Rocket was my favorite character, but in this one it's Drax. I think he's funnier in here than in the first movie. And his scenes with Mantis are really good.
Rocket is just as great in here as he is in the first one so I can't really think of much to say.
Vin Diesel is good as Baby Groot. I thought they were going to overuse his cuteness to the point where it becomes annoying, but no, they get most of that out of the way in the beginning. Also you see him as a teenager in one of the credits scenes and that's funny.
Kurt Russell is pretty good as Ego the Living Planet. We learn in the trailers that he is Peter's father, but we don't learn how evil he is. As I said, he murders his children who don't have the powers that he passed down to them. He also planted the tumor in Peter's mother's head that killed her in the first movie. That is when Peter decides he doesn't want anything to do with him and they kill him by blowing up the whole planet.
Michael Rooker is great again as Yondu, he's just really entertaining and it kinda sucks when he dies, but it's a really good moment, especially what he says to Peter about Ego before he dies. Also it's hilarious when he says "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"
And the other cast is good too, even if I can't think of much to comment on.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an entertaining sequel with some hilarious moments but it's not as good as the first.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 gets an 8.5/10.
Before I go, I want to say I'll be out of town tomorrow, so I'll review Spider-Man: Homecoming on Saturday.
