Thor: The Dark World - Film Review
Infinitython Day 8
I'm going to address the poster right away, this was a piece of fan art somebody made and a theater in China actually used it. And after seeing it, I had to use it for the review.
Thor: The Dark World is directed by Alan Taylor and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, and Christopher Eccleston.
Plot
A year after Loki's devastating alien attack on New York, the Mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) along with his friends Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and the Warriors Three (Ray Stevenson, who played another Marvel character, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano) fight to save the Nine Realms from deadly threats. When Thor's girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) discovers a fluid like weapon called the Aether, she unknowingly awakens the evil Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and his Dark Elf army. With this, Asgard may be facing it's darkest hour. Thor forms an uneasy alliance with his nemesis Loki to save Jane, stop Malekith and save the Nine Realms from total chaos and darkness.
Review
I'm actually not a big fan of this movie, I don't think it sucks or anything, but it is kinda forgettable. I think this my be my second least favorite MCU movie, my least favorite being The Incredible Hulk, I like the original Thor better and definitely like Thor: Ragnarok better.
I don't know if this review will be as long as some of my others, because I couldn't really think of much to say about it.
It's got some good parts in it, like Heimdall (Idris Elba) attacking the alien ship is pretty awesome.
One of the best parts is when Thor and Malekith and the portals in the sky, that scene is amazing. There's also lot of little moments that are cool, such as when Thor gets Loki out of his cell and he changes his appearance and one of them is Captain America. The credits scene that teases Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty cool.
Odin (Anthony Hopkins)'s line "You must think I'm a piece of bread that needs to be buttered heavily." is funny.
And it was funny seeing Erik (Stellan Skarsgard) streaking at Stonehenge.
It's also got quite a few negatives as well, like the villain, he's the most generic thing ever, like Steppenwolf from Justice League, he wants to destroy the universe for... reasons? I mean, I know he has some beef with the Asgardians, understandable, he wants control of the Aether, a dark weapon that turns matter into dark matter, to make everything dark. The Asgardians want to stop him, makes sense. What I don't get is why he wants to turn everything dark. Ok, you're going to make everything dark, when what? Are you going to conquer the universe or something? I just didn't get it.
Also, the scene where the dark matter takes over Jane is kinda weird, it's like when the symbiote took over Peter in Spider-Man 3.
Also, the comic relief didn't work for me, nothing against Kat Dennings, but I didn't find Darcy to be that comical or relieving. Same with her intern.
Let's talk about the characters. Chris Hemsworth is just as great as Thor as he is in the other MCU films so there's not much to say.
Of course, Tom Hiddleston is great as Loki. He stole the show with this one like usual. In this one, he is arrested for what he did in New York and he is now being held in a cell on Asgard. After Malekith starts doing evil things, Thor goes to get help from Loki to take down Malekith, but Loki betrays him, I mean he is evil after all. You think he's dead, but at the end when Thor is talking to Odin, it turns out it was Loki in disguise.
Anthony Hopkins is back as Odin and he is also great, but this time he doesn't want Jane on Asgard.
Natalie Portman is back as Jane, and she's not bad, but he has the Aether in her, and I mentioned what the Aether is already when talking about Malekith.
Overall, Thor: The Dark World isn't bad, just rather forgettable, and not one of my favorite MCU movies.
Thor: The Dark World gets a 7/10.
I'm pretty sure this is what most people think then they think "superhero movie", a big, buff hero who tries to stop the villain from taking over the world and gets the girl at the end, because that is very much what Thor: The Dark World is.
Stay tuned tomorrow for a review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
