Carrie vs. Jason - Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood - Film Review
Friday the 13th-a-thon Day 7
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is directed by John Carl Buecher and stars Lar Park Lincoln, Kevin Blair, Susan Blu, Terry Kiser, and Kane Hodder as Jason.
Plot
Years after Tommy Jarvis chained him underwater at Camp Crystal Lake, the dormant Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) returns to the camp grounds when he is accidentally released from his prison by a telekinetic teenager.
Review
Not sure where to start with this one actually. This was supposed to be Freddy vs. Jason but ended up being a movie about Jason vs. Carrie, hence the title of this review, except she's not Carrie. Instead, we have Tine (Lar Park Lincoln), a girl who's telekinetic powers are triggered by emotions, like Carrie.
The movie itself is quite good too, like in my ranking of the Friday the 13th series, it's #4 for me. It also has some good kills even if the MPAA really censored it. The sleeping bag scene is one of the best kills in the movie, possibly the whole series.
One of the actresses in the movie, Susan Jennifer Sullivan, who plays Melissa in the movie, was falsely reported dead in the Crystal Lake Memories documentary, but after fans did some research, it turns out she is not dead. Whenever she does die, hopefully she's not axed in the face by Jason.
Speaking of Jason, Kane Hodder is the best Jason we have ever had. He's also the only man to play Jason more than once, a record four times. I also love the effects they added to Jason, showing all of his injuries to date, it's just awesome. It really sucks that three of the four movies Kane played Jason in really sucked.
Lar Park Lincoln is good asCarrie White Tina. When she was a child, she accidentally killed her father with telekinesis as Crystal Lake, and goes back to Crystal Lake as a teenager to visit her psychiatrist who does a series of experiments for her to use her telekinesis, but it turns out he's just exploiting her for her powers. She defeats Jason by throwing stuff at him, burning the house down, and bringing the house down on him. To me, she's the last good final girl in the series, and this is the last good movie in the series.
Kevin Blair is good as Nick, he helps Tina with defeating Jason. I can't think of much else to say.
Susan Blu is Tina's mother, She is the one who discovers that Tina's psychiatrist is exploiting her for her powers. She's killed by Jason.
Terry Kiser is Tina's psychiatrist. He is also Bernie from Weekend at Bernie's. I went into him exploiting Tina so I won't mention it again. He is also killed by Jason, but it was heavily cut by the MPAA.
Overall, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is the last good installment of the series to me. And for a film that was supposed to be Freddy vs. Jason, it sure was better than what we got for a Freddy and Jason movie.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood gets an 8.5/10.
Stay tuned tomorrow for a review of Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, ending this marathon, and also stay tuned for a review of The Incredible Hulk tomorrow and Iron Man later tonight.
