Jurassic World - Film Review

Jurassicthon Day 4

Jurassic World is directed by Colin Trevorrow and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, and B.D. Wong.

Plot
A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

Review
This movie definitely brought the Jurassic Park series back from extinction after 14 years. Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park was the series, and then Jurassic Park III was the meteor that killed the series.

Speaking of The Lost World and Jurassic Park III, Colin Trevorrow says that he's not removing those two from canon, he's just now acknowledging them. That's fine with me. But this film definitely does not ignore the first movie, because we see Mr. DNA from the first movie, we see Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) fixing up and driving one of the jeeps from the first movie. Also, one of the characters wears a Jurassic Park T-shirt throughout the whole movie.

What do I think of the movie itself? I actually quite like it. I wouldn't call this movie "amazing" or as great as the original, but I still quite like it.

It does have some cool scenes, like almost every scene with the Indominus Rex was pretty awesome. And it's fight with the T-rex is amazing. Pretty much every scene involving dinosaurs is pretty awesome.

It is nice seeing Jurassic World as a working theme park with rides and people visiting. Probably what Hammond envisioned in the first movie before Nedry screwed it all up.

The movie is good, but it's very much like the others, people go to an island full of dinosaurs, everything goes wrong.

There are lots of callbacks to the first one, some of them are cool, some of them, just ok, like Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) luring the T-Rex out of it's pen, just like Ian in the first one. And Gray finding the same goggles that Tim found in the first movie.

There is one "subplot", it's so brief I can't even call it that, that just shows up to be abandoned. Gray tells his brother Zach that their parents are getting divorced, this is never brought up again, so why mention it?

One thing I didn't really like was them trying to militarize dinosaurs. You can't tame a wild animal to be your personal killing machine.

There's also a big lipped alligator moment where the guy in the Jurassic Park shirt tries to kiss the woman working with him only to turn him down. This is never brought up again.

Now let's talk about the characters. Chris Pratt is good as Owen. Despite mostly being a velociraptor whisperer, he's got some cool scenes in the movie. It's awesome seeing him on a motorcycle fighting dinosaurs and saving these two kids.

Bryce Dallas Howard is good as Claire, these boys' aunt and she's essentially the manager of this place, kind of like John Hammond in Jurassic Park. But she does have some pretty unintelligent ideas, like she disagrees when Owen says that the Indominus Rex is a very intelligent animal kthat must be stopped, and she rejects his orders to evacuate the park when it gets loose and rips out its tracker. Despite being their aunt, she really doesn't know much about them and just leaves them with an assistant, but they just escape.

The only character from the first movie who comes back is B.D. Wong as Dr. Wu. He is the one who created the Indominus Rex, and he, along with Claire, wants to attract more visitors. He comes off as more of a villain in here, as he is part of the operation to militarize dinosaurs. Even though Dr. Wu was more of a protagonist in the first novel, but the novel and movie are in two very different canons.

Vincent D'Onofrio is ok as the character he plays but I can't remember his name. He is also part of the operation to militarize dinosaurs. But he gets killed by a velociraptor. That's all I really remember

Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins are ok as the kids but I don't have much to say.

Overall, Jurassic World is a pretty fun and entertaining sequel, but it definitely doesn't reach the greatness of the first Jurassic Park.

Jurassic World gets an 8.5/10.

I'm still not sure when I'll be seeing Fallen Kingdom, so I'm nor promising a review tomorrow. I'll be back whenever I see it.
