BlacKkKlansman - Film Review

I think they're taking Star Wars in a new direction.

BlacKkKlansman is directed by Spike Lee and stars John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier, and Topher Grace.

Plot
Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), an African-American police officer from Colorado, successfully manages to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan with the help of a white surrogate, who eventually becomes head of the local branch.

Review
BlacKkKlansman is actually pretty great. It's got some great social commentary on racism and it's pretty entertaining in some parts. When I saw the trailer, I didn't know if it was going to be a comedy or not, because it showed some of the entertaining moments, and looked like a throwback to the old Blaxploitation movies of the 1970's, but it's actually a drama, and a really good one at that.

It talks about racism in the 1970's and it still applies today, as they showed footage from several riots back in 2017 and they also show footage from 1915's The Birth of a Nation at a KKK meeting that Flip (Adam Driver) is going undercover at. I've not really gone into my thoughts on racism online, so I'll give you a bit of a little bit describing my thoughts on it: I really, really don't like it. I really hate racism.

Now let's look at the movie as a whole, it's really good. It's probably one of my favorite movies of 2018 so far.

This movie is based off a true story, they make that clear in the beginning, but worded very differently. I'm not entirely sure how true it is to real events, but no matter how true it is, it would still be great if it was fiction.

It also does have some funny moments, like when Ron is talking with David Duke (Topher Grace), Flip with Felix (Jasper Pääkkönen) in Felix's basement, Ron and Patrice (Laura Harrier) talking about Blaxploitation movies, and the ending showing a corrupt cop getting arrested.

John David Washington is really good as Ron Stallworth, the actual cop who did this. He's great in pretty much every scene he's in, whether he's pretending to be a white man, or going undercover, he's just great.

Adam Driver is really good as Flip Zimmerman, Ron's friend, co-worker, and the guy who pretends to be Ron during KKK meetings. While watching the movie, it was kinda shocking hearing Kylo Ren saying a bunch of racial and anti-Semetic slurs. But yeah, he's great.

Laura Harrier is really good as Patrice, who is a Student Union Leader during the Black Power Movement than starts a relationship with Ron during his investigation of the KKK.

And everyone else is good too.

Overall, BlacKkKlansman is one of my favorite movies of 2018 so far. It's got humor, drama, some good social commentary, and it's overall just a great movie.

BlacKkKlansman gets a 9.5/10.
