The Conjuring Megathon

Well The Nun is out today, and I'm not seeing it today, I'm seeing it a couple days, and I didn't know when to start the Conjuring marathon, I watched all four in the span of three days and figured I would give these short reviews of all of them in this one post, I've never one one of these before.

This is actually my first time watching The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation, which I actually haven't seen at the time of writing this intro.

Also, spoilers for all these movies, you have been warned.

That said, let's get on with it.

THE CONJURING (2013)

The Conjuring is directed by James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, and Ron Livingston.

Plot
Based on the true story in 1971. Paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are called on to help the Perrons with their celestial disturbance. The disturbance inclines as the Warrens become closer to clearing the family's abnormalities.

Review
Now I know this movie says it's based off a true story, but I'm curious as to how true this movie says it is, as true story movies are never 100% accurate. I'm not sure if the sequels or spinoffs are true either.

True or not, this is actually a really good modern horror film, as we don't get many of those. Also, this is quite tame for an R-rated horror film, but it's kinda hard to remove anything that would take away it's rating.

I want to point out that this movie's scares, aren't just cheap jumpscares, they're actual scares, I mean I've seen this before so I wasn't scared, but they were actually legit scares, even when there are fake ones, James Wan doesn't use the music when you think an actual scare is happening.

James Wan actually does scares with haunted objects, but does it in a good way, unlike a lot of modern horror films, also, he uses little CGI, as he mostly uses practical effects.

Also, a dog dies in this, just thought I'd let you know, so don't watch this if you like dogs.

So the ghost in this movie is a witch who hung herself after sacrificing her baby and then curses her land and anyone who tries to live there. Also she possesses the mom (Lili Taylor) of this family who then tries to kill one of her own daughter. Also, never call a demon/ghost/spirit by it's real name, they don't like that.

Also, this is the first appearance of Annabelle, but as a side "character"?, as we see her in a rocking chair and in a glass box in the Warren's "museum" filled with potential Conjuring spin-offs.

Everyone in the movie is really good here, the Warrens, the Perrons, everyone else is good.

Overall, The Conjuring is a really good horror movie, probably not the best horror movie that involves possession or haunted houses, like The Exorcist is better, and The Shining, and this cinematic masterpiece.

I'm going to give The Conjuring a 9/10.

ANNABELLE (2014)

Annabelle is directed by John R. Leonetti and stars Annabelle Wallis (huh), Ward Horton, Alfre Woodard, and Tony Amendola.

Plot
Mia (Annabelle Wallis) and John Gordon (Ward Horton) are married and when John finds out that Mia is pregnant he gives her a doll in a  white dress named Annabelle but one night when satanic cultists invade the couples home and drip blood on the doll and smear it on the nursery wall it becomes a conduit for ultimate evil and now they must find a way to defeat the evil presence and the conduit known as Annabelle.

Review
This movie sucks, it really sucks. It is a major downgrade from The Conjuring.

If you are scared of books falling off of shelves and popcorn, this movie is for you.

Also, the movie's name is Annabelle, the doll's name is Annabelle, and the main actress's name is Annabelle.

If you bring the middle part of the A's down to the bottom, you get a triangle, there are three Annabelles that I mentioned, there's three sides on a triangle, so that means...

ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED

You'd think that a spin-off to The Conjuring would be either good or interesting, but it isn't. In fact, I kept checking to see how much time I had left while watching.

Now I have seen this before, I rented it a couple years ago, and I remember enjoying it, but it's definitely not good upon second viewing.

So the reason this doll is possessed is because these two Satanists went into John and Mia's house, the guy got shot by police, and Annabelle Higgins, the girl Satanist, kills herself in the other room and her blood drips on Annabelle. Alright. But then that woman who said Tony Stark was responsible for her son's death in Captain America: Civil War sacrifices herself and Annabelle disappears. But then she's bought by some older woman in a knick knack shop that leads into the beginning of The Conjuring.

The elevator scene was pretty good though, and the cast is ok.

Overall, Annabelle sucks, this movie proves that if a horror movie does successful, a bad spin-off will come out to make money.

I'm going to give Annabelle a 4/10.

THE CONJURING 2 (2016)

The Conjuring 2 is directed by James Wan and stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Frances O'Connor, Madison Wolfe, and Simon McBurney.

Plot
Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising 4 children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.

Review
I am happy to report that this is better than Annabelle. I think I like it a little more than the first Conjuring.

This film is also the first appearance of Valak a.k.a the nun from The Nun, and it turns out that Valak is using an old man who used to live in this house as a pawn to possess Janet (Madison Wolfe).

It's interesting seeing that they tied Ed and Lorraine Warren into Amityville, and I read today while writing this that they were involved in the Amityville Horror case. We see the Warrens holding a seance with the Lutz's, and it was kind of cool seeing Lorraine walking through the house with her hands positioned like she's holding a gun and you see Ronald DeFeo in the mirror, I thought that was a cool effect.

Also, in the Amityville house, Lorraine sees the vision that she saw in the first Conjuring that made her isolate herself for eight days, which was Ed dying, which doesn't happen in the movie.

Near the end, they think that Janet was faking it, but after listening to a recording of  Bill (the pawn)'s voice while possessing Janet, it turns out that both instances of him possessing her were actually a cry for help, he wanted to go on, but Valak wouldn't let him, and when they get back to the house, Lorraine defeats Valak by saying it's name and sending it back to Hell, and it's all over.

Everyone in the movie is really good here, yeah.

Overall, I think I like The Conjuring 2 a bit more than the first one, and it's a huge improvement over Annabelle.

I'm going to give The Conjuring 2 a 9/10.

ANNABELLE: CREATION (2017)

Annabelle: Creation is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia, and Miranda Otto.

Plot
12 years after the death of their daughter, a dollmaker (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife (Miranda Otto) welcome a nun (Stephanie Sigman) and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, where they soon become the target of the dollmaker's possessed creation, Annabelle.

Review
So this movie is far better than Annabelle, I actually quite enjoyed this one. This movie even ties into the first Annabelle, as Janice get possessed by a demon, which was possessing the Annabelle doll, and Annabelle was the daughter of this dollmaker, and they let a demon possess the doll, thinking it was their daughter, so after some spooky stuff goes down, the nun (no, not Valak) locks Janice in the closet, but she Shawshanks her way out, and goes to another orphanage, calls herself Annabelle, gets adopted, grows up, shanks her folks and that leads us into Annabelle.

This movie was good though, I didn't like it as much as both Conjuring movies, but more than Annabelle.

Also, Valak does have a cameo appearance in a post credits scene.

I do like how most of the movie is set at this one house, and how we get a little prologue showing what happened to Annabelle.

This is actually one of the Conjuring films I'm the lease able to talk about, but I did enjoy it.

Overall, Annabelle: Creation is a pretty fun horror movie and a major improvement over Annabelle.

I'm going to give Annabelle: Creation an 8.5/10.

Well, that was the first time I crammed on marathon into a single post. It was rather interesting writing this over a few days.

Well, come back on Sunday with a review of The Nun.
