Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - Film Review

Forcethon Day II

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is directed by George Lucas and stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Frank Oz and Christopher Lee.

Plot
Ten years after the "Phantom Menace" threatened the planet Naboo, Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) is now a Senator representing her homeworld. A faction of political separatists, led by Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), attempts to assassinate her. There are not enough Jedi to defend the Republic against the threat, so Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) enlists the aid of Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison), who promises that his army of clones will handle the situation. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) continues to train the young Jedi Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), who fears that the Jedi code will forbid his growing romance with Amidala.

Review
How is it possible that a film with less Jar Jar than The Phantom Menace actually be worse than Phantom Menace? It is very, very possible.

Let me start with what I hate most about the movie: The romance between Anakin and Padme is terrible. The romance in The Room was better. They have no chemistry, the dialogue sucks, and Hayden Christensen is just a terrible actor and comes off as creepy.

The special effects are terrible too. Most of the movie isn't even real, just blue screen. The Clones look awful too, there's not a single human clone in the entire movie, all CGI, they look like something out of The Clone Wars. Jar Jar looks terrible, the aliens looks terrible, and the entire film looks terrible, which is a problem I have with the prequels in general. George Lucas should've taken his own advice when making the prequels.

A positive I have is that the movie has less Jar Jar, he's only in it for about five minutes, so that's a plus.

I'll mention some illogical things, while leaving a link for the TV Tropes page for more.

Who completed C-3PO? Something I forgot to mention in  my Phantom Menace review: Why was Anakin building a protocol droid, something than can be mass-produced and shown in the beginning with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon? C-3PO can barely move hims arms so he'd barely be much help for Shmi?

While Obi-Wan and Jango were fighting, why didn't Obi-Wan yank Jango out of the sky with the force? It would've been about 2 seconds and he could've questioned him.

How does C-3PO know that R2-D2 is "always getting into trouble" if he just met him a few minutes ago?

Why didn't the gunship carrying Anakin not shoot Dooku? They did mention running out of missiles, but this is a gunship armed with laser cannons. I guess the plot wouldn't allow it.

I wasn't a huge fan of the fight scene with Count Dooku, Obi-Wan and Anakin. Why did Dooku let Anakin live? And when Dooku and Yoda fought, it looked like an old man dancing in front of nothing while waving his arms around, I thought that was pretty funny.

This is a rather illogical film like it's predecessor. But The Phantom Menace is just a better movie, this film is a mess..

The cast is ok, Hayden Christensen sucks, Natalie Portman is ok, Ewan McGregor is better in this film than he was Phantom Menace, Christopher Lee is good, Temuera Morrison is fine as Jango Fett. Not much to say here.

There's so much to say that I can't think of what to say so I'm gonna end it right here, sorry this wasn't as detailed as my TPM review.

See you tomorrow with reviews of The Room and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
