Cloverfield - Film Review

Cloverthon Day 1

Cloverfield is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel and Odette Yustman.

Plot
A group of friends (everyone who I just mentioned) enjoying a going away party for Rob (Michael Stahl-David), only for it to be ruined by a giant monster and now the film becomes a found footage sci-fi horror film.

Review
Not entirely sure where to start with this one. It's one of the better found footage horror films out there (no I have not seen The Blair Witch Project).

The film starts off rather slow in my opinion until the apartment starts shaking at the news mentions that there is a capsized oil tanker near the Statue of Liberty.

I like how the film is shot, with Hud (T.J. Miller) filming everything with a camera. Most found footage movies suck, but this one is rather good.

At the end of the movie, it shows Rob and Beth (Odette Yustman) on a Ferris wheel in Coney Island and the camera points out to the ocean and you will probably miss it on the first viewing, you'll have to look real close to see it.

You can see a small thing falling from the sky and landing in the water. That was a satellite falling, and that's what woke up Clover (the monster), in the spiritual successor 10 Cloverfield Lane, John Goodman's character says he used to work with satellites and that's one of the few (if not only) connections to this movie. More info on that here, since I haven't seen 10 Cloverfield Lane since I first rented it a couple years ago.

After the credits, you can hear a whisper saying "Help us" and if you reverse it, it says "It's still alive" saying that Clover is still alive, but this has been proven false by J.J. Abrams who says that the monster was killed during the bombing.

This film had a huge viral marketing campaign, despite no one knowing it was being made, as the first teaser had no title, and people were interpreting what this teaser was. The main characters actually have MySpace pages that you can visit but their posts aren't there anymore.

The cast is ok here, I can't tell you many of their names as we don't get much time to learn about them. T.J. Miller is the only name I recognize in this movie, as I haven't heard of anyone else.

Overall, Cloverfield is a really good found footage movie, if you're into these kind of movies you should check it out.

Come back tomorrow for a review of 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Cloverfield gets an 8.5/10
