Review
Finally, I got to see this tonight, after days of being sick, I can get this review out.
I thought this movie was good, I don't love it as much as I do Insidious or even Insidious: Chapter 3, but I enjoyed it.
I don't really like to go to much into plot details when a movie is just a few days old, so I won't go into those much, in case you haven't seen it yet.
One thing I liked is how this film directly ties into the first movie. It actually has archived footage of Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson from Insidious.
One thing I forgot to mention in my review of the third one is that I heard a rumor that this ties into the first movie, and this doesn't have the chapter numbering scheme of the other movies, so I made a joke that this is the Rogue One of the Insidious series.
The scares really could have been better in this movie, as most of them were just non-scary jumpscares.
Let's talk about the characters. Lin Shaye is great as always as Elise, the movie is mostly about her visiting her childhood home and investigating a haunting there. We actually get to know about her life more in this movie, as in here we learn that she ran away at 16 because her father who was abusive because he was afraid of her gift. We learn that she also has a brother whom she left with their father when she ran away, and now he hates her.
Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson are back again as Specs and Tucker, and they're pretty much the same in here as they are in the other ones, except they try hitting on Elise's nieces. (hey that rhymes!)
Josh Stewart plays Gerald, Elise's father. He's a bit of a jerk... yeah. He is abusive to Elise as I said, and he locked her in the basement because of her abilities when she was young and there was something else he did that I actually was not expecting that he did.
Caitlin Gerard plays Imogen, Elise's niece who has the same ability as her and travels into the Further to take down a new spirit we know as Key Face, as he puts Imogen's sister in the hospital.
Bruce Davison plays Christian, Elise's younger brother. As I said, he hates her at first, but then he forgives her at the end. I can't really think of much to say about him.
Overall, Insidious: The Last Key is a fine addition to the Insidious franchise, we learn more about Elise, but we also have quite a few jump scares.
This marathon is over now.
Looking back on my Chapter 2 review, I think these two deserve the same grade.
8/10
