Insidious: Chapter 2 - Film Review
Indiousthon Day 2
Insidious: Chapter 2 is directed by James Wan and stars everybody from the first as this is a direct sequel to the first Insidious.
Plot
Immediately after the events of the first Insidious, Renai (Rose Byrne) is being interrogated by police and the family temporarily moves into Josh's (Patrick Wilson) childhood home. They think they are done, but it turns out that when Josh went into the Further to retrieve Dalton (Ty Simpkins), he brought another spirit back with him which is currently possessing him. Meanwhile, Lorraine (Barbara Hershey), Carl (Steve Coulter) and Elise's former assistants Specs and Tucker (Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampsons) investigate the past to save the future (that sounds very Back to the Future-ish).
Review
I actually think Insidious: Chapter 2 is a decent sequel. No, it's not as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it.
I pretty much described the story in the plot section, so there's not much else to say.
Despite being the second in the series, it's technically the forth chronologically, as Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key are prequels.
One thing I really want to talk about is The Bride in Black from the first one. We learn that she's not actually a woman at all, it's an old man who's name was Parker Crane and was a serial killer who dressed up in that outfit because his mother would abuse him for acting like a boy made him dress up and act as a girl when he was a child. He turns out to be the one possessing Josh and attacks Carl, Specs, Tucker, and his family in Josh's body.
One scene I actually though was one of the best parts of the movie was the opening scene with Josh as a kid and we learn that he was followed by an old woman and Elise reveals that they need to suppress this astral projection abilities for his own safety. It's a really good scene, about ten minutes long, and they revisit it in the movie later when Josh, Carl and Elise are in the further.
We get more scenes with Specs and Tucker in here, and I actually do like them more in this one, but there isn't a lot to say.
The cast is good as always, Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are great as Josh and Renai Lambert and Lin Shaye is just as great as Elise. I think she's probably the best character in the series.
I also though Steve Coulter was good as Carl, an old colleague of Elise who helps Josh and Elise track down Parker's memories and stop him from possessing Josh and erases his and Dalton's memories of all this.
Tom Fitzpatrick is good as Parker Crane a.k.a The Bride in Black. I pretty much summed him up a few paragraphs ago.
And I already talked about Specs and Tucker so I don't have much else to say about them.
Sorry this review took so long to get out, I was out today and I tend to procrastinate with my reviews but trying to cut back on that. Sometimes when writing, I google stuff to research for my reviews alongside actually watching the movies and I get a bit sidetracked. Sorry.
Overall, Insidious: Chapter 2 is a good horror sequel, it's obviously not as good as the first one, but I would still recommend it.
8.5/10
