Venom - Film Review
I'm back.
Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Reid Scott, and Jenny Slate.
Plot
Journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is trying to take down Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom -- leaving him with superhuman strength and power.
Review
This movie isn't a turd in the wind like I thought it would've been, but it's not as good as it could've been.
Let's start with the positives. The movie was entertaining, I'll give it that, like when Venom verbally abuses Eddie, but that does lead into a negative that I'll get into later.
It's fun but not really great.
Seeing Venom fighting that other Symbiote near the end was pretty cool.
Seeing Venom fighting bad guys for the first time was pretty awesome.
Tom Hardy is a better Venom than Topher Grace was in Spider-Man 3, let's just forget Spider-Man 3 altogether.
The cast was good too.
For the negatives, well in some parts it feels like the movie tries too hard to be funny, like the jokes were very hit and miss.
Also, there were some parts where I was like "I don't think this is supposed to be funny but I'm laughing anyway." More on that in spoilers.
There was a character that gave something to Eddie and I was like "wait, how did she get that?" Again, more on that in spoilers.
The villain is forgettable and jut your typical evil scientist villain who I really have no reason to care about.
The story isn't that great, and it's a little inconsistent between serious and funny.
Also, the end scene from the movie is in the trailers. Hollywood, why do you have to do this?
This film reminds me of a movie that came out earlier this year called Upgrade, and that movie is essentially Venom but better. It's about a guy who has an AI put into him and it talks to him and controls him.
And a time gap that creates a small plothole that I'll talk about in spoilers.
Overall, Venom isn't as bad as I thought it would be, it's not great, but it is entertaining.
I'm going to give Venom a 6.5/10
