Leprechaun - Film Review

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

Leprechaun is directed by Mark Jones and stars Warwick Davis, Jennifer Aniston, Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, and Robert Hy Gorman.

Plot
In 1983, Dan O'Grady (Shay Duffin) returns from Ireland with news that he stole gold from a leprechaun (Warwick Davis). The Leprechaun kills Dan's wife and he locks the Leprechaun in a crate. The Leprechaun causes Dan to have a stroke. 10 years later, Tori (Jennifer Aniston) visits Dan's farm with her father and meets Nathan (Ken Olandt), a man who helps painting the farm. On the farm, there's Alex (Robert Gy Horman), Nathan's younger brother, and Ozzie (Mark Holton), Alex's friend. Ozzie accidentally opens the crate that has the Leprechaun in it. Alex and Ozzie find the Leprechaun's gold and Ozzie accidentally swallows a coin. The Leprechaun wants his gold back and kills anyone who gets in the way of him and his gold.

Review
Is this movie good? No. Is this movie entertaining? Yes, it's a horror guilty pleasure for me. None of the Leprechaun movies are that good, but the first three are entertaining, but the last four are not.

Out of the seven films in this series, only the first two were released in theaters but neither of them did really well in either box office or reviews, Leprechaun 2 has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, But it's Rotten Tomatoes so who cares?

Oh, and one thing you should never do is bring a Leprechaun to space, that did not go well. That would be like if they brought Jason into spa... oh.

This film was written and directed by Mark Jones, who actually was a writer for such quality shows like Rubik, the Amazing Cube, The Scooby and Scrappy Doo Puppy Hour, and The All-New Popeye Hour.

As I said, this film is not good, but I can't help but be entertained at many parts of the movie whenever I watch it, such as:

The Leprechaun on a tricycle.

The Leprechaun killing a shop owner with a pogo stick.

This.

The Leprechaun finding a box of Lucky Charms, eating some and then spitting them out. They originally filmed the scene with actual Lucky Charms cereal, but General Mills didn't like that, so they reshot the scene with a fake brand.

Ozzie and Alex finding the gold and Ozzie accidentally swallowing one of the coins. Actually most of the scenes with Ozzie and Alex are entertaining.

The scene where they kill the Leprechaun outside the well and he climbs back up. You can tell how fake those rocks look when he climbs back up. Oh, and after they (supposedly) kill him for good, they set up a sequel.

There are many dumb but entertaining parts in this movie that I don't think I can't mention them all. Let's talk about the cast.

Of course, I had to talk about the main character first, The Leprechaun. Warwick Davis is great as a former Ewok turned Leprechaun, he's funny, entertaining, and literally magical. He is definitely the best part of this movie. If they got someone else, I don't think it would be as good, I mean look at Leprechaun: Origins.

Jennifer Aniston makes her feature film debut in this movie, of course this was before Friends. If it wasn't for the popularity of that show, I don't know if she'd as big as she is now. She's ok as Tori, but you can tell she's just starting out.

All the other cast members are fine, Ken Olandt, Mark Holton, Robert Hy Gorman, John Sanderford, and Shay Duffin are all ok as Nahan, Ozzie, Alex, Tori's dad, and O'Grady are all fine in this movie, but Ozzie and Alex are fun to watch.

Overall, Leprechaun is a fun watch on St. Patrick's Day. If you plan on watching it, do not take it seriously, I mean it's a film about a killer leprechaun, you can't expect anything else but cheese.

For a serious rating, Leprechaun would get a 4/10.
For an entertainment rating, Leprechaun would get an 8/10.

This and the first two sequels are horror guilty pleasures for me.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
